Challenge "ADFGVX — Part 2"

  By: admin on Aug. 15, 2011, 5:15 p.m.

A pair of plaintext and the corresponding ciphertext encrypted with the ADFGVX cipher ist given. Can you reveal the substitution and transposition key used in this example?

it's not quite clear what is meant by the 'substitution key' here.

you get the polybius square, which sometimes is just randomly filled with the characters and the whole square is the key, and sometimes begins with a keyword and is filled with the remaining characters.

i have a perfectly working solution with a logical looking polybius square containing a german 6-character-word, but it tells me it's wrong and i can't find any other solution :(

ok, after hours and hours of confusion i finally figured out that there are two solutions which yield an identical but transposed polybius square, but of course have different transposition keys and i tried the wrong one all the time :-/

I did this by hand within a minute or two, I don't see what the problem could be.

You have plaintext so you just need to figure out which perms make text match up.

Be careful with the substitution square…remember the conventions.

ja, manchmal ist komisch, dann ist eine blockade da und man ist nicht in der lage über den tellerrand zu schauen… an anderen tagen hat man glück und die erste idee ist die richtige^^

Besides the solution requested by the challenge's author there are several other solutions where the 6-letter substitution key does not represent a valid german word. Also, I found at least two 6-letter words which are present in a corpus of german words and which solve the challenge (with the same permuation key). The first one I submitted was accepted so I didn't submit the second one.

Just be aware of this in case your solution is not accepted...

i got the six letter substitution key and the four letter transposition key, and deciphered it and the result matched.

i tried to post my solution as KAISER,4-2-1-3 like in the pdf, and it didn't work.

can somebody help me? thanks

Hi, I checked the solution you submitted and the format is correct, but the solution itself is not. Maybe go through each step again and triple-check everything. Best, newton

i dont understand how it is not correct, is it supposed to be a meaningful german word?

beside that, i tried to decrypt the message and it worked.

Thanks newton

Hi Adel,

I can't help you there atm. Unfortunately looking up the solution is not that easy for me as it'a a challenge with special validation logic. Also the Challenge has been solved many times, so it's possible with the information given. Best newton
