Challenge "An 'unhearable' message"

  By: admin on June 5, 2012, 7:58 p.m.

Your friend sent you an audio file that contains only a strange melody. In the email, your friend writes that the file contains a message encoded by a variant of Morse code. Can you find out how you can hear the Morse code?

be added a translation to English for the author:

I found Morse code, but it doesn't seem to make sense to me.
Is the quote in English, German or Latin?
There are too few letters to run a statistic.

It is in English.

Nice one Viktor !
Took me not so long to find out how you 'encrypted' the quote.
But is was quite some work before I got the solution.
For me this is a level 1 and a half…

I am glad you liked it. :-)
Maybe they should have used continuous levels instead of discrete ;-)

当您删除了不可能,无论是,不论如何不可能,必须是真理。
Translation for the author:
The solution corresponds with famous quote of Sherlock Holmes:
When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. [HTML_REMOVED]

This is true, but now we have one famous quote fewer to use in future challenges :-( ;-)

Hi,
Could someone clarify "the name of character that had spoken the original quote" ?

i tried several answer (upper case, lower, space, dash…) and now i have only 4 trials. [HTML_REMOVED]

Is this about

  • Author.
  • a principal character (Title of the book).
  • The animal in the story.

Thank you for help.

You can read this in the PDF:
"Send me the last word of the message along with the name of a character that had spoken the original quote, separate the two words by a comma."

The format of solution is defined quit unambiguously.
The only information that is missing is that it should be written in uppercase, but it should be taken as a matter of course, if there is not written to use different format of letters.

Another help, if it is not clear what is meant by the word "character":

Question: Who is the author of the quote: "To be, or not to be, that is the question."?
Answer: William Shakespeare

Question: What is the name of a character that said: "To be, or not to be, that is the question."?
Answer: Hamlet

Of course it may be that many other people (characters) had spoken the same quote, but they only repeated the original.
So when you are answering such a question you should always provide a person (character) that had spoken it first.

And additional hint:
The name of the character may not be as obvious as someone might think at first.

Solved.
This is one of the solutions that i had tried in lowercase.
Anyway, thank for this ingenious challenge.

I've got the "morse" code and an encrypted string. But it has no spaces and also very short for frequency analysis, making it nearly impossible to decrypt without any further info..

I do not think it is that bad. Unicity distance of a general monoalphabetic substitution cipher written in English is about 27.6, hence theoretically only 27 or 28 letters of ciphertext are needed to break the cipher. Ciphertext in this challenge is sufficiently longer than the unicity distance. I believe its length is enough to be able to break it.

OK, I really liked this one, but it has one small evil twist which led me in the wrong direction :-)

Thanks a lot,
Alex.
