Challenge "Kaskade-S/T — Part 1"

  By: admin on March 4, 2011, 3:06 p.m.

A friend sends you a cipher designed by him and asks you to discover the used key, using a given plaintext and the corresponding ciphertext.

in english:
Due to a wrong start date some points were calculated wrongly. This error is now corrected. Should you find any errors in your points please send me a PM.

Die Challenge selbst war schnell gelöst. Leider fing damit die Problematik erst an.

MfG BE

Hallo,

I thought i'd bring my discussion here instead of polluting the other thread.

How am I supposed to solve this without programming knowledge? This is a level 1 challenge and I have no idea how to do it using pencil and paper.

I am learning a bit of python but probably don't know near enough to be able to solve this. The file Kaskade opens now but for about half a second then automatically closes.

I can't even see the ciphertext/plaintext since the files wont open.

Oh, I have now found out that I was trying to use command line to access it.

I now am able to open everything…now to figure out what it all means.

Maybe the plaintext/ciphertext files can be included as txt files with this challenge too since at least then people without programming knowledge can still try to solve it by hand.

a) The additional zip file contains the plaintext and the ciphertext, each in a text file. Just unzip the additional file.

b) You don't need programming skills to solve the problems: I know people who made it with P&P or with Excel. The trick is to think about the relationship between plaintext and ciphertext to get the key.
The key then is a permutation of the 26 capital letters written down twice.

c) The delivered Python file is only delivered so that you can check the key you found by yourself.
And if you have installed Python 3.x the best thing to do this is using one of the command line calls written at page 3 of the challenge description: e.g.
python3.1 Kaskade.py -e plaintext ciphertext 26key -l 26 -f A
where "26key" is the name of the file containing the key you have to find first.

Ah right, it came up as an unknown file type on my laptop. I just assumed that it was a file that you can only access with a specific program that I didnt have. Now that I know it is a text file, that is fine.

I think I know how I am going to form the key now.

I now have the only possible key, but my solution wasnt accepted in hex. Was I correct in repeating it?

Can someone check my solution?

I did that, and later realized I didn't include all of the leading zeros.

What leading zeros?

Surely the capital letters A-Z have hex values 41,42,43,…,5A so the answer is just a string of these numbers repeated twice.
